When assessing suspected distal forelimb fractures in cattle, you want radiographs that let you see the bones from two perpendicular directions. A lateral view of the carpus and fetlock shows how fragments are displaced in the horizontal plane and helps evaluate overall alignment and any angular deformities. But many fractures, especially around the carpal and fetlock joints, are better seen when you look from the palmar (or plantar) aspect. The dorsopalmar (or dorsoplantar) view opens up the joint surfaces and reduces bone superimposition, making it easier to detect fractures that run through the articular surfaces, as well as small fissures or periarticular wear that might be missed on a single view.

Taken together, these two orthogonal views provide a complete picture of fracture geometry, articulation involvement, and displacement, which is essential for accurate diagnosis and planning treatment. Oblique views can be added if a fracture remains equivocal after the standard views, but they are not as informative as the combination of lateral and dorsopalmar/dorsoplantar views for initial evaluation.
